1. Tie Tips – knot a problem!
  • The knot you choose should relate to the collar of your dress shirt. The wider the spread of your collar, the larger the knot can be. For most collar styles, a Four-in-Hand knot is perfectly suitable. For a Windsor spread, or Cut-away collar, the Half-Windsor knot is the right choice.

  • The type of silk will change the size of the knot. A soft satin will tie a smaller knot than a heavy woven silk. You may need to adjust the knot you choose to accommodate the fabric.

  • Allow the tip of your tie to just touch your belt.

  • Always untie your tie after wearing. You should try to actually UNTIE the knot the way you tied it up - simply yanking the knot apart will definitely shorten the lifespan of your tie.

  • Roll the tie around your hand and keep it rolled on your counter overnight before you hang it on your tie rack. This will allow the lining of the tie to flatten out for a better knot the next time you wear it.

2. How to clean a tie.

A tie is made up of many different materials – inner lining, thread, interfacing, and the silk outer shell. Each reacts differently to dry cleaning. As a result, often ties will not retain their former shape after they have been dry cleaned. Although you can send ties to a dry cleaner, we recommend the use of a reputable stain removing product whenever possible. The following are instructions on spot cleaning. Always read the instructions on a stain removing product before applying to the tie – ensure it is suitable for use on silk.
  • If the mark is water based, first let it dry, then rub the stain remover over the mark in the direction of the weave of the fabric.

  • If the spot is particularly difficult, we recommend that you steam the stain area before using the stain remover, as above.

  • Always dry ties flat, otherwise they can lose their shape

3. How to store your ties:
  • Always store ties untied

  • We recommend that you roll up your ties, at least overnight, when you are not wearing them. This reduces creases to both the outer silk shell, and the inner lining, and restores the natural bounce.
