1. Tuxedo Dilemma
What do I wear with a tuxedo these days?
What don’t you wear is more to the point! You will find all different looks with tuxedos. Here are some of our suggestions for an elegant, yet unique look.
The Shirt – While wing-tips are still acceptable, more popular these days is a regular collar. But don’t think that ruffles are your only option! We have a series of beautiful white-on-white shirts, with covered buttons, no pocket, and French cuffs for exactly this purpose. Interesting stripes, checks or patterns done in tone-on-tone can be very elegant and truly unique with a tuxedo. We have covered the buttons to avoid having to wear a stud set if you wear a bowtie. And if you wish to break with tradition, try a cream or silver tone-on-tone shirt instead of white! Still dressy, and definitely different.
The Tie – bowties and long ties are both acceptable. We suggest if you are going to wear a long tie, make it special. Try a tie with a contrasting knot, or something with a little flare – not the tie you would wear to work. As for a bowtie, why not be daring? Try a bowtie with a little colour – like our wonderful Dion two-tone bowties. And if you are going to wear a bowtie it is worth the effort to learn to tie it yourself. A self-tied bowtie has more style. If you don’t know how to tie a bow tie, we have provided the step-by-step instructions below along with drawings to follow. But in my opinion, the simplest way to do it is with your eyes closed! It sounds crazy, but it works. Most people get confused looking in the mirror. On top of that, everyone is convinced that it is a difficult thing to do – so that certainly adds pressure. My advice is close your eyes, ignore the contours of the tie, and pretend you are tying the laces on your shoe. Once you have the basic shape of the bow in place THEN you may go to the mirror and twist and tug until you have the tidy finished product (but not TOO tidy – otherwise it will look like a pre-tied bowtie!)
The Pocket Square – this is a MUST to complete the ensemble. A man with a pocket square is a man who pays attention to details. And white is definitely not the only option. Why not try a puff trimmed in red to pick out the colour in your tie? Or silver to match the shirt you have selected? We have a new selection of pocket squares with contrasting borders or patterned pocket squares in a wide array of colours.
The Hidden Touch – Why not have fun with your feet? Interesting socks, like our Ovadafut collection, can only be seen when your sitting down and they can add a little bit of whimsy to your ensemble.
2. The Evolution of the Sport Shirt
The word “Sport shirt” would imply a shirt that one would wear for sport - a t-shirt or top meant for function over form. But the sport shirt is evolving in this new world of “Business Casual”. While a tie may be optional, good taste shouldn’t be.
With dress pants and a blazer or sports jacket, there is an abundance of beautiful sport shirts that can be worn with or without a tie to create a look that is both professional and elegant. A pocket square to match adds a bit of flair to the ensemble, and shows you pay attention to details.
The newest look is a two-button collar with a higher neckband. This collar can be worn with a tie, or left open at the neck without revealing too much. Don't be afraid of colour! Stripes, checks and wonderful colours are a great way to add interest to your ensemble.
"Dressing up" doesn't mean "Dressing dull". So have fun with your clothing! The return of the suit can be enjoyable and good for business.
